The joys of buying a home

As I mentioned in a previous entry, my sister Marilyn just purchased a home. Now it’s crunch time. With just over a month until move-in day, she’s got a lot to do. Last weekend, she started packing items that she doesn’t expect to use over the next month. I suggested she try to organize and pack her things now because it’s easier to pack bit by bit instead of doing it the day the movers arrive. Believe me, I’ve seen that happen and let me tell you, that’s never a fun way to move.

We viewed the home again yesterday so that Marilyn could figure out what kind of renovations she would like to do. Fortunately, the house is in excellent condition. That’s the beauty of one-owner homes - they’re often well-kept. They simply need a little updating to make it really shine. So far, Marilyn has decided to install new flooring, paint, replace the kitchen cabinets, put in granite countertops, expand the master bath to include a shower, renovate the bathroom, and replace the front door. Although the house is in move-in condition, Marilyn naturally wants to customize the home to make it truly hers. It’s funny because only two weeks ago, she wasn’t even sure if she was ready to become a full-fledged home owner. Now, she’s so excited about the home that it’s all she talks about. But that’s the way it should be with new home owners. It’s a big step to go from apartment owner to home owner so she deserves to gush about it for a little while longer.

You would think that after being in the business for nearly two decades, the satisfaction we get from matching a client with a suitable home would have faded by now. But that’s not the case. Seeing how happy this new home has made my sister just reinforces the reason why we’re in this business - to help clients find a place they can call home.
