Camping anyone?

This coming long weekend marks the first weekend when many Canadians venture into the great outdoors to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Knowing the rejuvenating effects of nature, it’s a shame we’ve never planned a family camping trip. We’ve never pitched a tent together, roasted marshmallows over an open fire or slept under the stars. But we would never deny these pleasures to our kids. Last weekend, our oldest son had the opportunity to participate in a school camping trip in the outskirts of Whistler. He had a fantastic time!

The boys in his class were all required to pull together a list of supplies from thermal sleeping bags to non-perishable food. It was a great adventure for everyone. During their five days together, the boys hiked, studied the area and learned a number of survival techniques that could prove handy one day.

When our son returned, he was exhausted and in desperate need of a shower. He learned many things during those five days and will probably remember that trip as one of the highlights of his school years. Now if only we could get the other kids pumped up about camping…
